Rodeo and China

Deng Xiaoping visited the United States in 1979, as the first senior official from China in thirty years. One of the highlights of his trip was a visit to the Simonton Rodeo. He rode in a stagecoach, and later a cowgirl presented him a cowboy hat and a western duster coat.

Accordingly, Orville Schell, who served as the Director of the Center for US-China Relations at the Asia Society, said he considered this gesture as the coming together of two countries, where each decided to cooperate.  Many Sino-US experts regards that moment as the beginning of the renewal of US-China focuses and cooperation on rural development issues.
